Hey guys I wanted to come through with a new blog right before the New year! So Im going to start by saying that I haven’t been watching anime as much due to Disney plus launching, Ive been watching a lot of old Disney movies and of coarse the Mandalorian. However I had someone who suggested this anime series and I went ahead and watched it just because why not!
So when getting onto a series or watching a movie I always like to get some background knowledge, like knowing who the creator is what other films or series they’ve made. This series not so much it was the weekend I was bored and needed something to watch, so I just pulled this up on my computer and binged my life away until I completed the series. (which didn’t take much time honestly lol)
One of the things that popped into my head while watching the first episode is Paprika, at the end when looking up this series it showed Mahouse was in charge of the animation production and Satoshi Kon was who directed this anime (makes sense on why I got the reference right away). I love when im able to tell who’s responsible for these amazing pieces of art.
The story begins with a cartoonist, artist, whatever you want to call her named Tsukiko, who constantly feels pressure at her work place from her boss, her fellow co-workers, everyone. Then one night, Tsukiko is attacked by an evil-grinning kid with gold Rollerblades and a baseball bat. Two Japanese detectives are brought in on the case, soon they discover a rash of other assaults that range from a snobbish elementary school kid, a nosy tabloid reporter, a crooked cop, a researcher and tutor with a double identity disorder and so on. Besides almost suffering from nervous breakdowns and strings of paranoia, they all have one other thing in common: their assailant is the same person who attacked Tsukiko, and they named the character “Lil’ Slugger” ( I just want to know who’s responsible for naming him little slugger lol) At first, the two detectives can’t find any connection to the attacks, but as they dwell a little deeper, one of the cops starts to see a pattern of behavior between the victims and their assailant. As more and more clues start piling up, the cops begin to realize that the suspect could be anyone and it can be no one. The suspect is right in front of them or he could be somewhere down the street.
This show had me on the edge of my seat as I wondered who Lil’ Slugger was ( and why tf did they named him “Lil Slugger” lol) and why he has a tendency to clonk people on the heads who are mentally and emotionally depressed. It seems that no matter how hard I tried to figure it out, I just couldn’t get a possible answer behind the mystery of the show. Kind of like a detective trying to solve a murder. This show is not to be missed and it will definitely have you on the edge of your seat, from start to finish. Overall the final episode glues everything together and it all makes a lot of sense. I love how they were able to mess with you mentally and kept me guessing who was this person doing all these fucked up things to people.
Now I’ve mentioned in many of my other blogs that Im a sub kind of girl but the Dub version was surprisingly very good! All of the Characters were so relatable. I think that the one that got me the most was Harumi Cho – employed as a researcher at a university, as well as Yuichi Taira’s tutor. Harumi suffers from dissociative identity disorder, and her alter is a sex worker named Maria, her story was so dark. Not many people understand mental disorders but also feel like people who admit to their mental issues, feel as if others think its all in their head and it can all be fixed if you “choose” to act right. If you want Mystery, thrill, violence and real life scenarios please give this 13 episode series a try, you will not be disappointed!
I also want to apologize for my lack of consistency on my website, I love posting blogs about anime, I love interacting with other about something I truly love and care for. Sometimes when your life revolves around work and taking care of others, you tend to forget to give yourself and the things that you love some time! If you have a series that you will like to recommend please leave a comment below and let me know what you think about Paranoia agent if you’ve watched it before . Until next time sayonara!
